Before Dreaming

I've something like 10 days before I leave NYC to drive almost 10,000 miles across America and back. My route will take me first to Indianapolis, then up through Michigan to the U.P, into Wisconsin (much like the former Czechoslovakia, I hear), on through Minnesota and across North Dakota. I'll be taking a southern detour off Route 2 and down to South Dakota to see Badlands National Park, then back up to drive across Route 2 through the northern third of Montana (which promises to be beautiful country) and through Glacier National Park. A very brief run through Idaho and then on to Washington state.

From Washington state I'll head south along the coast, down through Oregon and into California. Los Angeles will be the point I turn eastward and head for home, but first a few stops along the way. In Arizona, I'll be going through Sedona, then onto New Mexico and southward through Texas, looking for Presidio and the great Big Bend National Park. If I'm not dead yet I'll be moving on to Austin, TX to see where (and how) the southern Democrats live. The next big stop is Tail of the Dragon (www.tailofthedragon.com) a road every motorcyclist has heard about, 318 curves in 11 miles of road, enough twisties to make any rider happy. As the Tail is just south of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, I'll of course be riding that N.P. as well (on the advice of my good friend Paul, I bought a National Park Pass which gets me in to all the N.P.'s for a one time fee of $50.00 - check 'em out at www.nationalparks.org). There's a stop or two to make in North Carolina and then I'm riding again, on the Blue Ridge Parkway and onto the Skyline Drive. After that I'm in Front Royal, Virginia and looking for a way back to NYC, avoiding interstate as much as possible (though I fear I'll have to deal with it at some point).

I'd do more if I had the time. Missing out on the N.P.'s of Utah is a shame, but I can't stay out there forever (or maybe I can ...).

I'll be trying to post at least once a week, and if I can get some photos up, I'll do that as well.
